Keeping a Textile Reference Library

A textile reference library should answer practical questions: Which interfacing gave this linen enough support? How did that Shetland yarn change after washing? Which sleeve adjustment removed the drag line? If the collection cannot answer, it is only a box of scraps.

The system does not need expensive storage. It needs consistent labels, samples large enough to read and a structure that matches how you work.

Create four kinds of record

Material records

Keep a representative piece of fabric or yarn with fibre content, supplier, date, width or meterage, washing method and final dimensions. For yarn, include gauge before and after blocking. For cloth, record shrinkage in both directions.

Construction records

Mount seam finishes, buttonholes, plackets, pockets, zippers and edges. Use contrasting thread when the purpose is to remember the sequence. Write the stitch length, needle, thread and presser foot directly beside the sample.

Fit records

Keep tracing-paper overlays, small-scale diagrams or photographs of successful alterations. Label the pattern name, size, body measurements and date. Bodies and pattern blocks change; a date prevents an old solution from becoming a mysterious rule.

Design records

Collect colour studies, motif tests, failed repeats and the small swatch that eventually became a garment. Design records are especially valuable when they include what did not work and why.

Use a two-part label

Attach a small strung tag to the sample itself and place fuller notes on the mount. The tag protects essential facts when the sample leaves its page. Use a short ID on both so they can be reunited.

  • Project or sample name
  • Material and source
  • Needle, hook or machine setup
  • Gauge, seam allowance or key measurement
  • Finishing or washing method
  • Date and the question being tested

Store for touch

Do not permanently seal textile samples behind plastic. The point is to handle the surface, fold it, compare opacity and inspect the reverse. Light mounting tape, photo corners, punched tags or removable stitches hold a sample while keeping it available.

Use ring binders for flat, ordered studies and box files for bulky knitting, padded structures and garment sections. Oversized or three-dimensional tests can be photographed, labelled and stored separately with the same ID.

Make retrieval easy

Organise by the question you are likely to ask. A dressmaker might use jersey edges, tailoring, closures and fit. A knitter might choose colourwork, lace, cast-ons, shaping and finishing. Broad categories stay useful longer than a system built around individual projects.

Add a one-page index: when a box fills, list its contents and photograph the list. Searchable notes on a phone can point you back to the physical sample.

Review the library in use

Bring the relevant binder to the table at the beginning of a project. Add the new sample before putting the materials away. Once a year, remove duplicates that teach the same lesson and improve labels that no longer make sense.

A sample earns its space when it shortens the distance between a question and a confident decision.

Over time the library becomes a record of the hands as much as the materials: what you notice, what you test and how your solutions become more precise.
