# Organise for Autumn Sewing Now

Published 2026-05-05

Is the first week of September your real New Year? It is mine. Between children returning to school or university and the change of season, it feels like a better beginning than January.

I was refining an autumn palette, planning my sewing and trying to be more thoughtful about the cloth entering my life. A seasonal reset makes the next project easier to see.

## Reset the autumn stash

- Sort remnants. Keep pieces genuinely useful for bias binding, bag making, mending or patchwork; recycle the rest.
- Review old works in progress. Decide to finish, alter or release each one.
- Move light summer fabrics to the less accessible part of storage.
- Bring autumn-weight cloth in the current palette into the sewing room.
- Roll interfacing around cardboard tubes instead of folding it. Label each roll so the weight and fibre do not become a guessing game.
- Photograph useful lengths and keep a searchable inventory with measurements and fibre notes.

## Let the clear-out reveal projects

This is a messy job while it is happening, but sometimes it returns a forgotten treasure. A Designers Guild cut-velvet remnant reappeared in exactly the colours of the season's palette. Strong, textured and large enough for a bag, it suddenly had a purpose.

A useful stash is not the smallest possible stash. It is one where you can find the cloth, remember why you kept it and connect it to a garment you actually want to wear.

**Make the next step visible:** place the pattern, fabric and required notions together. A project in one bundle creates far less friction than an idea scattered across three cupboards.
